Barathi the greatest Tamil poet who voiced first against women Slavism

Tamil women were almost slaves to men few years ago. It was thought that women are made for men. They had to cook, wash, feed and even worship men. If a woman’s husband died, then she had to suicide herself to worship her husband in the paradise or hell. They did not go to schools. They were not even allowed to go out of home without a man.

Unwritten laws told that a woman must have fear and shy. Barathi was first to tell the society that “only dogs need to have fear and shy.” Others hinted him. He was the very first gentle man who promoted the word “female freedom” to the Tamil society. He lived for freedom of Tamils and Tamil women. Barathi not only voiced for female freedom also made it in his life.

As usually, elders proposed a child girl for him and they got married. But Barathi didn’t make her as a slave of him. He gave equal rights to her. Barathi even educated his wife. He gave his poems to her and encouraged to read, think about freedom and to breathe the air of freedom.

In Barathi’s poems, he created a dream woman who is Kannamah as a model for every woman. Barathi illustrates about her as follows:

‘Kannamah has forward looking. She is very smart. And she is very honest and proud of her intellectuality. Men will have desire to worship her as a mother’.

Barathi viewed Kannamah as his daughter, mother, wife and even a good girl friend. That means he wanted every women to become like Kannamah.

Unfortunately Barathi was killed by an elephant in a Hindu temple in his 45th age. But he lives in all succeeded women’s mind as a god father. Nowadays his dream is becoming as reality.

Great salute to BARATHI.
