Are we so reluctant (from a Tamil’s perspective being a Tamil myself)
Being a Jaffna Tamil, I’ve been proud and will be for the whole life because us is the only society that still successfully survives with all kinds of circumstances, wounds and all unforgettable tearful memories of war. In any corner of the world, our people are there and other than some desecrated stories, others are doing well. What I meant by ‘desecrated stories’ is that most of our guys are surviving in such jobs which are really not suitable or not up to their standards. Even most of them find it as a ruin of their ‘self esteem’ and a painful way of living but what to do? They have spent a lot on going to such countries and of course they have lost a lot. Anyway they have to earn and this is one part of the ‘western Tamil society’. Other part remains somewhat green and it contributes those who had gone there several years ago and have stared their own businesses. It is strongly encourage able since these people don’t depend on anyone else and is good sign of achievement while being a war affected society. But what really lack with their business is that they are just satisfied with earning more than enough dollars or pounds or whatever but are failing in building good branded businesses. Might be because we are habited to think inside a small circle and it really stimulates a negative view on being creative. Here the war cannot be a reason since I am talking about those who had already gone abroad and enjoying a very comfortable life with ‘self employment’. If I have not mistaken, most of those people are involved in businesses such as’ supermarkets’ and ‘restaurants’. I do really happy that they are doing well, earning good profits but what if they do it in a large scale and brand it properly and adds some value to our society too? From each country, there are some guys who lead industries and they add values to their societies. Inside Sri Lanka also the same thing applies. What we do is we just complete our degrees and even masters and looking for a company to give a job, we do get it and staying there until the retirement and. I guess we are so fundamentals, so far away from entrepreneurship, so reluctant to think out of the box, so reluctant to keep our pairs of eyes to see this world differently and now we are in a position to think about it. Isn’t it?
